1960s Activism

Did the Activism of the 1960s Produce a Better Nation?

  1. The Civil Rights activism of such groups as SNSS, SCLC and CORE, who held such movements as bus boycotts, sit-ins, and civil disobedience helped create a better nation. These acts didn’t make the nation a better place while happening or directly afterwards, namely because of the riots, arrests, and assassinations that happened while the activism was happening, but they helped get the ball rolling on desegregation and better and more equal rights. Such things that helped create a better nation from this activism was desegregation, better black voters rights, education, and eventually, the election of the first black president.

  2. Activism in the 1960's did produce a better nation because it made people come to realize that blacks and whites were equal and not different. Blacks were just as much human as whites the only thing different about them was their color and ethical background. Activism bettered the nation through bus-boycotts, sit-ins, and non violent protests. The black people did all of these to let society know that they did not agree with what the whites thought of them. So blacks didn't ride the bus they sat in at lunch counters and refused to leave until they were served or arrested; encouraged by Martin Luther King Jr. they did long walks and non violent protesting to rebel against the racist people of America. This protesting against racist people led to blacks being equal to whites having the same rights as whites without being segregated.

  4. The Activism of the 1960's produced a better nation. The organizations that were for the activism of equality between black and whites were striving to make the nation better for all no matter their race. These gropes such as the SCLC and CORE were able to recruit people and convince others to see their way through boycotts and other acts of civil disobedience. Eventually the groups were able to accomplish their goal by bringing in many powerful people that believed in their cause or that were just caving to the mass numbers of people. Through this the activist groups were able to provide a better nation for future generations.
