Abraham Lincoln was a great president, but he was not the “greatest”. I believe this, but I do not agree with any of the points from the ‘no’ article, at all. Every president is unique with their own pros and cons. Mr. Lincoln is not exempt from this fact. Because of this, there is no “greatest” president, just many presidents of varying degrees of “greatness”. Lincoln did do many great things such as “[preserving] the unity of the nation both in size and in structure” and “[allowing] 4 million black Americans [to gain] options beyond a life of slavery.”These accomplishments changed America forever in great ways, but other presidents have done great things in their own ways and times. The title “greatest” is an undeterminable one because each president had a different time in history with completely different circumstances that make judging “greatness” unfair and impossible.
I agree with your statement, "there is no greatest president, just many presidents of varying degrees of greatness". I like this statement because there has truly never been a perfect and there probably never will be a perfect president.
I completely agree with your thoughts that each president has their pros and cons and I also agree that the "no argument" was in no way beneficial to the topic or the author's thoughts. To me the author complained and was off topic at times with his thought process.
Abraham Lincoln was a great president, though it is too hard to compare which presidents were the best because of the different problems they faced and the time period they were in. I do believe that no other President faced the level of problems to deal with then Lincoln. He was president in maybe the most critical point in our country's history. Despite the country falling apart, he preserved the Union and eventually freed the slaves. Two of the biggest accomplishments that any president has done. Although the "No" author contends that he over stepped his boundaries and extended the presidential power, he clearly had to in a time of great emergency. Lincoln did whatever it took to keep the country together, and that means he can't please everyone with how he does it. Although there have been a few great presidents other than Lincoln, no president faced the challenges that he did. Therefore, if I had to pick the greatest president the U.S. has ever had, I would pick Lincoln.
I agree about when you say that no other president has had to face the level of problems that Lincoln had to. Lincoln had to face his own country go to war with each other. That is like trying to stop two big herds of Rhinos going head on and you being right in the middle of the two herds trying to stop them from butting heads.
I agree with your point which states, "Lincoln did whatever it took to keep the country together, and that means he can't please everyone with how he does it." He definitely did what was necessary, and in the end, it all paid off. He did many great things.
I agree with the no author at times when he says Lincoln overstepped his bound, but I also agree with your thoughts that Lincoln was given some of the hardest challenges has ever had to face. Lincoln had to deal with a split nation, but the fact that he did so by using rights he did not possess and taking rights others required makes him seem out of line in some poeples' eyes.
Abraham Lincoln was a really good president but compared to other presidents it's really hard to say if he was the best. For the time period that he was in and what he had to go through while in office he did pretty good job. I believe Lincoln followed the oath that he took the day he was sworn into office. He tried to the best of his ability to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. Though many thought that his decisions were good people in the South did not agree with him because they felt that Lincoln had picked sides with the North. Even though it seemed like Lincoln had picked sides with the North Lincoln was just trying to preserve the Union. I believe that Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents we have had because even though he failed at a lot of the things he was still a smart man and I wish we could have another president like him.
I agree with your statement that Abraham Lincoln, compared to other presidents, wasn't the best. His time in office was incomparable, but due to his decision to stick with the North, he seemed one-sided.
I agree with you as far as your statement that his time in office was incomparable, however, I believe that in siding with the North he upheld his oath that he would protect the Union. He didn't really have a choice in siding with the Union because he swore he would preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution.
I like how you compare Lincoln to other presidents, and how it’s hard to compare all presidents, because all presidents have their weaknesses and strengths.
I believe that Abraham Lincoln wasn’t the best president the country has ever had. This is because, yes he did do some incredible things, but he had many helpers. A lot of the winning of the war came from Grant’s added help as the only really successful general for the Union. If Grant hadn’t become the general of the Union’s army, then the North would have lost the war. Lincoln also was a bit wishy washy with slavery in order to keep the Border States with the North. When the first Emancipation Proclamation came out, he only said slaves were free in the Confederacy, and only the ones that hadn’t been taken over yet. This was even after Lincoln declared the Civil War about slavery. He was not the greatest president the U.S. has seen yet.
I agree that Lincoln was not the best president this country has ever had. He had a lot of famous and intelligent helpers like Grant who helped push for Lincolns cause. I also don't like the fact that he was "wishy washy" with the deal of slavery, even though many people thought this war was going to decide what happens with slavery.
While Abraham Lincoln seems to have been an outstanding president, was he truly America’s BEST? I don’t believe that he was; first, he was the final push that caused the secession. Second, he took power away from the Border States and away from congress. The revolution occurred so that no single man could have control over the U.S.; however, Lincoln seemed to be more of a dictator than the originally constructed position of the president. Lincoln’s decisions went to the extent of taking away certain states’ rights to govern themselves, was this not what the original colonies feared?! Lincoln took control of a country, and although the outcome was not horrendous, he did not have the rights to take as the amount of power that he did. I believe that Lincoln was a good president; however, he was far from the BEST.
Lincoln was definitely a great president, but I have to disagree with your point that states, "Lincoln seemed to be more of a dictator than the originally constructed position of the president." I feel that Mr. Lincoln did the things he had to to save this great country, and for that I am truly grateful.
I agree that Lincoln was not the BEST president, however you have to give him some credit, because he was thrown into the presidency at the worst time possible. I doubt that there is anyone else who could have delt with the problems that he did, as competently as he did. It may have seemed like dictating when he bypassed congress to get things done, but that was the point; he had to bypass them to actually Get Things Done. Otherwise we may not even be a United States of America today.
Even though Abraham Lincoln did succeed as president, it is hard to call him the "greatest president" of the United States. As a president, he did fight to preserve the Union and abolish slavery, but if it wasn't for the great general, general Grant, then Lincoln perhaps would not have won the war. Also, Lincoln wasn't exactly "decided" on slavery, due to the boarder states and their loyalty. Another reason I do not think Abraham was the greatest president is because he was assassinated at the peak of his career. If he was to continue living and was to serve his second term throughout reconstruction, then maybe he might have earned the term "Greatest President". Although I agree with his preservation to the Union and his "undeclared" war for the abolition of slavery, I do not believe that he has become the greatest presidents of the United States.
I agree with how you think that even though Lincoln did end the Civil War and preserve the Union, he didn’t do much good politically before he was assassinated.
President Lincoln was indeed a great president, but he was not the "greatest" president. How are you even supposed to measure greatness?! It just so happened that he was running for the presidential position while all of this hoopla was taking place in America. I would not call Abraham Lincoln "great," but perhaps "lucky." As stated in the "No" response in the book, Taking Sides for Issue 16, "[Lincoln] was carried along with the tides. Yet a measure of his importance is that he was at the heart of the major political events of his era." It just so happened that Lincoln was confronted with the many issues of the country at his time and it just so happened that he had also had views and beliefs regarding these problems. Of course he was going to do something about the problems, he kind of HAD to for the sake of his faltering reputation. Many people did not like him as he was when he entered office, so I feel that Lincoln did what he did during these problematic times to appease the people who had disliked him. How are you going to measure the "greatness" of Lincoln? Whoever would have entered office at the time would have been great because there was still going to be these issues that the president would have to deal with. President Abraham Lincoln was not the greatest president just because of what he was served when he entered office.
I definitely agree with your main statement that Abe Lincoln was not the "Greatest" president ever. However, you have to give the guy some credit because I don't think that just ANYONE could have "entered office at the time... (and) been great". The north could have elected some psycho who just sat in his office doing nothing during the war.
Lincoln was not the best, but he made quite a movement in our nation as a whole. He was a hit and miss in popularity as the war waged on under him, he began to abuse the authority of a president as he was using much more power than he had when it came to making decisions about the next move on battle fields. As he grew more and more knowledgeable throughout his term so did his strategy on choosing his generals to fight his war. Though many things in his term deemed him a "bad" president he did some good. He produced the Emancipation Proclamation in order to put an end to the secession of the states through little things. As many of the southerners seen him as a person of no good deed he was simply a man doing as he thought was right in the Constitution and to his country being torn apart because of the simple acts of nothing more than the differences in the ways of life in the North and South. Lincoln tried to keep the Union together by force, but then realized constitutionally he could not by their rights he would be violating them in order to keep together a "perfect" nation. He also began to think his military actions through. Though he may have not been our best, he was not the worst. Lincoln was a push through trial and error kind of man and was pleasant. He had his faults and this is what drove him forward for the North to fight the "good" fight for his country.
Even though I don't fully agree with you, you make a very persuasive stand point. You did really well in seeing both sides but still maintaining your own viewpoint. You've almost made a believer out of me.
I believe that Abe Lincoln was not perhaps the "Greatest" president, but he was an important and influential one. Most people would agree that you cant brand just one president as the best, however I would would argue that he is among a GROUP of the greatest. Out of all of the presidents up to now Lincoln had the worst luck as far as the timing of his election. He was bound to catch some criticism, because at any time of war there is always a side that is unhappy. Overall I feel that he handled his job and situation as good as anyone else could have.
I like your idea of "a group of the greatest" rather than just one. You bring up some good points, like how the timing of his election kinda sucked for him.
President number 16 Lin Abraham Lincoln also known as Honest Abe, was he the greatest president of the United States? Well I believe that there is no such thing as the 'Best', 'Greatest', or 'Perfect' president. There are just many presidents that did great things, and made near perfect choices but that does not mean that their term was the greatest, or that they had the greatest presidential term. All presidents are faced with the same basic job, lead the country, some just have better opportunities to prove themselves than others, and some have something that stands out good or bad that makes them more memorable.
I agree with your point that there isn't really a "best, greatest, or perfect president". I also like how you bring up the fact that each presidency is different, providing different opportunities (sometimes better) to some presidents rather than others.
Abraham Lincoln was, indeed, an amazing president. However, we are all human-Abraham Lincoln included,of course-which entitles mistakes with everything we do. I didn't really agree with the NO author very much with the points he made though... In my opinion, greatness is measured by achievements as well as contributions to everything else. Lincoln can be credited with many contributions to the betterment of the presidency and the country as well, such as the emancipation of the slaves (preliminary to the 13th amendment) and he brought the Union back together. Plus, he also kept a level head throughout his presidency (a great feat for anyone in that position in itself). He has many great achievements next to his name. So do other presidents. My point is, no one president can really be given the title, "The Greatest President" since they have all made errors in their presidencies as well. For example, Lincoln struggled to keep a decent general in charge of the Union's army during the Civil War, which prolonged the war a tad. Making mistakes is what we, as normal people, do best, that's how we learn (at least that's what I'm told). Perfection is an unreachable state. It simply does not exist; therefore, neither does a single "Greatest President" ever.
Abraham Lincoln was not at the time well liked. His stand points were amazing and not only did they work, they changed the future of America. I know that he could not have been as good of a president if he had not had all of the presidents before him I will not give all the credit to him but I believe that he is what the president should have been and needed to be. I don't believe he was the "Greatest" president because he could not have made the advances without every president before him.
I like how you incorporate the past presidents into his success because weather the presidents liked each other or not they had to work with one another one way or another.
